A great leather belt pulls an outfit together – but only if it fits. Here is how to get it right.
The easiest way is to take a belt you already own and measure from the point where the leather meets the buckle to the hole you use most. That number (in inches) is your belt size.
No belt to measure? Take your trouser waist size and add about 2 inches. For example, if you wear 32-inch trousers, order a 34-inch belt.
The classic rule is simple: match the colour of your belt to your shoes. Black belt with black shoes, brown with brown. Metal buckles should ideally match other metals you wear, such as your watch.
Cheap belts are made of bonded leather or layers glued together, which peel and crack. A full-grain belt is cut from one solid strip of hide and can last for decades. Look at the edge – it should be solid leather all the way through.
If you want just one belt, choose a reversible belt – black on one side and brown on the other. Otherwise, a black formal belt and a brown casual belt cover almost every situation.
