Walk through any market and you will see “pure leather” written on wallets, belts and jackets that are actually made of PU or rexine. Fake leather looks good on day one, but it cracks, peels and smells of plastic within months. Real leather does the opposite – it softens, darkens and becomes more beautiful with age. Here are seven simple tests you can do before you buy.
Genuine leather has a rich, warm, slightly earthy smell. Synthetic leather smells of plastic or chemicals. Bring the product close and take a breath – your nose is one of the most reliable tools you have.
Real leather is made from animal hide, so it has natural, irregular pores, small creases and tiny marks. Fake leather has a perfectly repeating pattern printed by a machine. If every “pore” looks identical, be suspicious.
Look at the cut edge of a wallet or belt. Genuine leather has a fibrous, suede-like edge, or a smooth burnished edge that has been sanded and polished. Fake leather often shows a layer of fabric or foam sandwiched between plastic layers – or the edge is perfectly smooth and shiny like plastic.
Press your finger into the leather. Real leather wrinkles and gathers under pressure, and it feels warm and flexible. Synthetic material feels cold, smooth and springs back like rubber.
Put a single drop of water on an unseen spot. Genuine (especially vegetable-tanned or aniline) leather absorbs a little moisture and darkens slightly. PU leather lets the drop sit on top without soaking in. Wipe it away quickly afterwards.
Ask the seller to show you an older piece. Real leather develops a patina – a deeper colour and soft sheen where it is handled. Fake leather does not age; it cracks and flakes.
Good leather costs more to buy and takes more time to work. If a “leather” jacket is priced like a fabric jacket, it probably is not leather. Look for tight, even stitching (hand stitching is a great sign), clean edges and solid metal hardware.
At Leather Hub every product is made from genuine leather and finished by hand. If you are ever unsure, message us on WhatsApp – we are happy to send close-up photos and videos of the leather, edges and stitching before you order.
